Introduction to Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient therapeutic modality that utilizes needles to stimulate specific points around the body. From head to toe, there are more than 365 points and the acupuncturist selects ten to twenty optimal points to regulate imbalances that is causing dysfunction and pain. Studies show that acupuncture can also help improve blood circulation, regulate hormone production, and stimulate nerves to produce pain controlling neurotransmitters. The needles are made of sterilized stainless steel and are disposed after single-use.

Warm-acupuncture

For health problems that are chronic or caused by cold tendencies, adding warmth to acupuncture treatment can help improve overall treatment effects. This can be done by burning dried mugwort leaves (moxibustion) on the tip of the needles, or by directly heating the needles with fire and then inserting it into the site of pain.

Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture is the use of small electric currents to further increase acupuncture treatment effects. After needle insertion, electric clips are connected to the body of the needles and the electroacupuncture device is turned on. The acupuncturist sets the device to a desired frequency and slowly increases the power of electric current that is being passed along the needles. When treating musculoskeletal disorders, different frequencies are known to produce different neurotransmitters such as endorphin, dynorphins, and enkephalin, that all help to reduce pain.

Electromagnetic Acupuncture

Energy Acutherapy is an innovative treatment method that uses a thermal electroacupuncture device called ‘Whata153’. It is known to improve blood circulation, improve immune functions, and help reduce inflammation on the site of pain. Especially good for joint pain, plantar fascitis, swelling in the extremeties, and coldness.

Cupping

Cupping helps to release tight muscles, improve circulation, and to help the body relax. Cups are placed on the body and the air inside the cups are sucked out using hand-held pumps. This causes negative pressure inside the cups that not only stretches the muscle fibers outwards, but also helps to increase blood volume and tissue oxygenation around the area.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a treatment modality that uses dried mugwort leaves to warm acupuncture points. The leaves are finely ground into powder and pressed into sticks or cones that can be burned directly on the acupuncture point, or placed indirectly over the area. Dried mugwort leaves have long been known for its anti-inflammatory effects and the heat that is produced by burning the leaves also help increase overall acupuncture effects.
